OBS Background Removal: Green Screen and AI Setup

To remove a webcam background in OBS, use Chroma Key for a green screen or a compatible AI background-removal filter for an ordinary room. Apply the filter to the camera source and place the replacement background below it in the Sources list.

A live setup must maintain both a usable cutout and stable frame delivery while your other sources are running. This guide separates setup, picture problems, and processing load so you can identify what to change before a stream.

Choose a path before installing anything

Start with the camera alone in a test scene. Once it works, add your game capture, slides, overlays, and other sources. This makes it easier to tell whether a problem belongs to the camera path or the full production scene.

Set up a green screen with the native Chroma Key filter

  1. Add your camera as a Video Capture Device and confirm that its unfiltered image is working.
  2. Right-click the source, open Filters, and add Chroma Key under Effect Filters.
  3. Select the appropriate key color. Adjust Similarity to control how much color is removed; excessive values can erase the subject.
  4. Use Smoothness to soften the boundary and Key Color Spill Reduction for remaining key-colored edges.
  5. Put an image, video, or other source below the camera to make the replacement visible.

OBS documents these controls in its Chroma Key reference. Defaults are starting points, not a preset for every webcam. Recheck a moving hand and any clothing close to the backdrop color after each adjustment.

Set up AI removal without a physical backdrop

One option is the third-party OBS Background Removal plugin maintained by Roy Shilkrot. Its download page routes users to supported packages. Check the release’s OBS version, operating system, and processor requirements rather than copying an installer from a different machine.

Close OBS, install the matching package using its instructions, and restart. Add the background-removal effect to the camera source’s Effect Filters. Filter names and model options can change between releases, so use that release’s documentation. If the filter is missing, check compatibility and whether the installer targeted the OBS installation you are actually running.

Start from the plugin’s defaults. Record a short test containing a turn, a hand crossing the face, and a prop entering the frame. Change one setting at a time and compare the same movement. A threshold value from another model is not necessarily meaningful for yours.

Using NVIDIA Broadcast or another virtual camera

A camera-processing application adds another stage between the physical camera and OBS. NVIDIA’s Broadcast setup guide tells OBS users to add a Video Capture Source and choose Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast); camera resolution is configured in Broadcast. Check the application’s current system requirements before installing it.

Do not assume that “background removal enabled” means an alpha channel reaches OBS. Place a bright source below the virtual camera and check whether it shows through. If you still see a solid rectangle, inspect the camera application’s output behavior and use its documented replacement or keying workflow. Avoid applying a second AI removal filter until you know what the first stage outputs.

For troubleshooting, compare the physical camera directly in OBS with the virtual-camera path. If only the processed path fails, investigate that application and its settings before changing the entire OBS scene.

Separate edge problems from performance problems

If fingers vanish, do not treat a higher stream bitrate as a segmentation fix. If the network drops frames, replacing the backdrop will not resolve the connection. These are different problems even when viewers describe both as “bad video.”

Measure load with the complete scene running

Use OBS statistics to distinguish rendering lag from encoding lag. OBS’s encoding performance guide explains the load involved in composing and encoding scenes, including the effect of resolution and frame rate.

Compare an equal-length recording with background removal off and on while your normal applications run. If problems appear with the filter, try a less demanding model or a lower camera capture resolution where supported. Reducing output resolution alone may leave the filter processing the same high-resolution camera feed. Change one part of the path at a time and repeat the comparison.

Treat 30 fps or a smaller camera image as options to test, not mandatory settings. There is no single RAM or GPU specification that guarantees smooth operation with every model, game, encoder, and scene. Keep a working fallback scene available before making changes to a live setup.

Do a short rehearsal before going live

This suggested rehearsal is a check of your setup, not a published benchmark:

  1. Speak and move normally, including gestures near your face and shoulders.
  2. Turn sideways, lean toward each edge of the camera frame, and bring a common prop into view.
  3. Switch to the heaviest scene you use and run the game or presentation at normal load.
  4. Make a visible clap and inspect the recording for audio alignment.
  5. Review the local file for missing foreground, edge flicker, and stutter before streaming.

If the effect becomes unreliable during a broadcast, use the tested fallback scene. Avoid repeatedly adjusting unfamiliar model controls while viewers are watching.

Recording a cutout is different from exporting alpha

Removing the camera background inside an OBS scene makes lower sources visible. A normal H.264 recording of that scene is a finished composite; it does not preserve the camera as an independently editable transparent layer. OBS Virtual Camera output should not be assumed to carry alpha either.

If you need an isolated subject for later editing, retain source footage using a recording workflow you have tested. Common questions

Can OBS remove my room without a plugin?

The native Chroma Key filter removes a chosen color; it does not identify a person in a multicolored room. For that footage, use a compatible segmentation filter or camera-processing application. Check the tools available in your OBS installation before adding software.

Why does my background return in another scene?

Inspect which camera source that scene uses and which filters are attached to it. A separately created source may have different settings. Verify both the source and the layer order instead of assuming scene changes preserve your intended setup.

Is post-processing always better?
